Snow falls in thick, white drifts on one of the longest nights of the year. A light shines in the heart of Brooklyn as 150 souls gather to celebrate the launch of UniTribe, a group seeking to “connect, collaborate and co-create with existing networks and communities of all cultures, sub-cultures, spiritual practices and generations.” Folks journey in from the cold to a second story loft filled with twinkling psychedelic lights, a jungle of vegetation, transcendental artwork and a blow your face off sound system. The stage was set for a special evening.
We knew from the moment we watched the promotional video that this was going to be a special night. Reading the UniTribe manifesto was like finding a soul mate on Match.com. UniTribe seeks to create “a culture of love and positive change.” Just like us! It sounds like a lofty goal, right? But I can see how its possible with events like this. I had so many interesting conversations, met so many truly kind people and felt completely free to express myself. We warmed up to the sounds of Dalanshare. We witnessed mind blowing beat poetry. We lost our minds to the dynamite host band, Dynasty Electric. We grooved to the latin/electronica beats from Navegante. We marveled at the musical and visual poetry of Instant Conductors. We experienced Yoga on the Dance Floor with Ekayani. There was dancing, laughing, singing. Comfort zones expanded. New connections were made. It was a magical evening.
Within had a display at the event, but honestly Nikki and I were too busy dancing and meeting way awesome people to stand next to our booth. My favorite comment of the night was from Carrie, a lovely redhead who baked and transported her famous velvet cake to the party. She loved the idea of the affirmations on the inside of our tees because it is truly about the wearer. She said that when we wear statements on the outside of our clothes, our perception of what other people think of our statement clouds our intention. Wearing an affirmation on the inside makes it truly about us. Well said Carrie.
Something about visiting New York City makes me see things a little differently. I never feel quite the same after. There is so much possibility, so much inspiration. This trip was no exception. We’ll keep you posted on other UniTribe events so you can join in the experience.
