One week and counting...

By: Laura D | August 13, 2009

One week left at my full-time employer. Next week I jump into uncharted territory as a jobless, homeless vagabond in an “uncertain economy” (I promised I would never use that term, hence the quotes). What the heck am I doing? I’m leaving my good paying job where I am appreciated and respected. Aaron and I are selling our fancy condo in the heart of Boston. I’m changing my last name when we get married in three weeks. Do we have a new place to live? No. Do I have another job lined up? Not exactly.
Do you ever get this nagging feeling that everything is all wrong? Your dream life feels out of reach. You don’t have time to do the things that are really important to you. You’re not inspired. When does this end and how far do you go before you can’t take it anymore? These are all things I’ve given some serious thought to over the past few months and we finally came to the conclusion that now is the time to take the leap of faith. I have this beautiful and meaningful business that I want to pour my time and efforts into. I want to teach yoga. I want to have down time. I want to travel. So I’m doing it. After the wedding we’re hitting the road. Maybe Thailand, maybe southern France. Anywhere where I can get out of my head and open my perspective. Then we’ll figure out from there.
The reactions I get from people are always very telling. It is a mixture of “You’re nuts” and “Wow, that’s amazing.” More of the latter. Which tells me we’re all yearning for something. I hope our crazy leap inspires others to just do it. Life is over in the blink of an eye. I saw that when my father passed away so quickly.
Our I am free design means a lot to me right now. It represents being liberated. Free from self-imposed financial burdens, free from society’s expectations and free from my own. Don’t think I’m not terrified, but for the first time I feel it. I am free.
