Have you ever been to one of those hypnotism shows where they pull people up on stage and make them do outrageous things? I’ve always found hypnotism quite mysterious and intriguing and started to really believe there was something to it when my rather reserved friend was pulled on stage at a show and did foul things to a phallic lollipop in front of a large crowd. Hmmm, clearly there is something going on here.
Over the past six months it seems that information about belief systems keeps flooding into my awareness. It started with Brian Klemmer, a life coach that talks about changing your perception and belief systems to change your life experience. Then I read the Presence Process, then The Nature of Personal Reality, The Go-Giver, Psycho-Cybernetics, Full Catastrophe Living and The Celestine Prophecy. I picked up each of these books in a different manner, some were recommended to me, some randomly grabbed off a shelf. The striking thing is that they’re all talking about the same thing. They’re all talking about how our view of the world shapes the way we experience it. For a simple example, think of how waking up “on the wrong side of the bed” sets the tone for the rest of your day. You’re grumpy and in turn people are less friendly to you, more confrontational, and you have a rotten day. If you wake up in a good mood you smile at people, they smile back, things seem to fall into place easier, challenging tasks are less annoying, the day is smooth. The common thread here is your internal state and the way the outside reacts to it. Of course our state changes from day to day, but there are underlying themes or tones to our life experience, whether it is one of melancholy and drama or one of anxiety and fear or one of ease and gratitude and joy. Are we born with these tendencies? Can we change them? That is what all of these books talk about and I’m learning more and more that we can absolutely change them, and for me it has been worth every effort and quite the adventure to work at doing so.
So back to hypnosis. Is it hocus pocus? When you think about its really not that mysterious. We have a belief system that makes us view the world a certain way, and rather than reading these books I’ve been reading and going through the work to change them, an expert in hypnosis changes our perception instantly through specialized techniques and the power of suggestion. Suddenly we are not nervous to be in front of a crowd, we are uninhibited. Our beliefs are not holding us back. Our mind is open. Phallic lollipops aside, it is pretty amazing what we can do once the mind is out of the way.
The more we can explore why we think the way we do and what assumptions we make about the world, the more we can start to change the way we view what happens to us. Its not mystical or metaphysical, its just a lens we’re looking through that makes the same situation look different to us than it does to someone else. And wouldn’t it be best to use that to our advantage? To believe that we’re awesome and that we’re all in this together and that other people are inherently good. How can you start changing your mindset today?

This I Believe

This I Believe is an amazing series on National Public Radio. People from all walks of life submit essays about their core beliefs; the values that guide them every day. These brief essays, read by the author, are often beautifully poignant.

When I first heard this particular essay by Jackie Lantry on the way home from work one day, I sobbed. And sobbed. And not because it’s a sad story – but because it’s a gorgeous story about the transformative power of love.

My FAVORITE part of the whole essay comes in the last 10 seconds. The final words of the segment, spoken by the announcer, always bring tears to my eyes. We both found it a relief that we didn’t have lofty expectations for this one day of romance and paying attention to each other. We felt we could do this all year without building it up for one day. So I’ve stuck my nose up at V-Day. But something changed this year. I started thinking how cool it is that we actually have a holiday that encourages people to express their love and affection for each other. That reminds people to slow down from their busy days and say “I love you.” And its not just for lovers, its for mothers, sisters, friends and teachers. How lovely!

Now Aaron and I aren’t going to run out and make dinner reservations at crowded restaurants or go see a corny movie, but I will take a moment to be grateful for all the wonderful people in my life. I feel very blessed that I have so many people to love.

So here it is – Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

Tonight is a big night for the battle against heart disease and for our little Within Organics tees. The 7th Annual Woman’s Day Red Dress Event is on! Celebrities get together on the red carpet to support this charitable cause. And guess what they’ll find in their gift bags…drumroll please…‘I am love’ affirmation tees from Within Organics! That’s right, our tees are sitting happily in VIP gift bags, just waiting for the likes of Mary J. Blige, Colbie Caillat and Jennie Garth to lay eyes on them and take them home. Ok, we’re realistic. We know the stars may not ever see the tees, but at least their publicist or personal assistants might and that’s good enough for us. But just in case, if you see Mary J. rockin’ our ‘I am love’ tee in the pages of US Weekly let us know. We think she would look great!

You betcha. Its the new phenomenon this year and we like it. The summer is full of colorful and vibrant produce displayed beautifully in the golden sunshine. During the cold winter months we are condemned to roam the aisles of the stark, cold supermarkets. Its a tragedy really. But if you’re close to either Natick, Wayland or North Attleborough, Massachusetts there is another option. Local producers bring in their finest root veggies, honey, fresh baked breads and treats to these Winter Farmer’s Markets. We spent last Sunday in <a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/North-Attleboro-MA/North-Attleborough-Winter-Farmers-Artisan-Producers-Market/95295524954?ref=mf" target=_blank">North Attleborough in the warmth of a heated greenhouse with a five pieace band providing a grassroots ambiance and the smiling shoppers bringing their good vibes and cloth shopping bags.
If you’ve had the pleasure of watching the movie <a href="http://www.foodincmovie.com/" target=_blank">Food, Inc. you may have experienced the same sense of helplessness I did over the state of our food system and our health epidemic. I left the theater thinking that Farmer’s Markets are a ray of hope in a world of morally lax corporate giants. When you shop at a Farmer’s Market you support your local community, make healthier food choices and your grocery shopping becomes an event, an experience, rather than just an errand on your list. I realize that realistically we can’t purchase everything on our list at the market, but I wholeheartedly enjoy what I can purchase and treasure every apple, every carrot and every leafy green vegetable I do take home.
Within Organics will be in North Attleborough again on Valentine’s Day, so if you find yourself looking for a last minute V-Day gift for your sweetheart, mother sister or friend, our ‘I am love’ tee just might do the trick. The bright and graceful red heart design states the affirmation in five languages inside the heart, and inside the tee you’ll find the Within signature affirmation scripted under the hem. Its lovely.

Come stock up on the fruits of the earth and and say hi to us at our booth. We hope to meet you there!

All of sudden you may find a life going on around you that you hadn’t noticed before.
This phenomenon can happen in big cities or small towns. I lived in and around Boston for five years and would catch myself going to the same restaurants and coffee shops. Now I live in the peaceful mountains of Vermont and I’m looking at the area with fresh eyes, surprising many locals with all the cool things I find in the area. Last night we drove to “the big city” to see a Marilyn Monroe movie at a refurbished old theater. The theater had a good sized crowd from all walks of life and next door was a hopping coffee shop with a lively open mic night going on.

How can you rediscover your area with fresh eyes? Try these five tips for starters and let us know if you come up with any of your own!

1. Try one restaurant that you haven’t visited before. If selection is limited, try giving a place you haven’t been to in a while another chance. Maybe they have a new owner now or the menu is improved. I discovered that the diner in the next town over now has a vegetarian menu.
2. Look for special events held by the local college or university. They often offer free lectures, seminars and performances.
3. Many dance studios offer free open house classes so you can try your hand at salsa, tango, hip-hop, swing or belly dancing.
4. Walk or ride your bike rather than driving whenever possible. You may stumble on little spots you wouldn’t notice when traveling by car.
5. Volunteer at your local homeless shelter, nature conservancy or community center. You’ll be connected to tons of events and you’ll surround yourself with fabulous philanthropic people that inspire you.

Happy hunting friends and feel free to share your rediscovery experiences!

If I Had a Million Dollars...

I’d help Kiva!

We love Kiva because they support low-income entrepreneurs around the globe. Anyone with an internet connection can lend money to a basket weaver in Bangladesh or a goat farmer in Ghana. These small, micro-loans help the entrepreneurs obtain the necessary capital to launch their businesses which, in turn, enables them to escape chronic poverty. Let’s help Kiva change the world!

A note from Kiva:
“Every day Kiva connects over 3,000 people with more than 700 low-income entrepreneurs around the world. To help us expand our reach and continue doing this, we need your vote on Facebook now! Winning the Chase Community Giving challenge would enable Kiva to make critical investments in staff to strengthen and expand Kiva’s Field Partner network while building and improving the Kiva website to better educate, connect, and serve Kiva lenders.
From March to December 2009, she ran the 3,132 miles between Boston and San Diego. I met her in March of last year, a few weeks before she started her journey. She was exactly as she seems in the below video – a super happy, motivated, inspiring woman. But why on earth would you want to run across the US? Her goal with her trans-America run was threefold. First of all, it has been a longtime dream of hers to run across the country, and she knew the time was right for her to go for it. Plus, she wanted to serve as a source of inspiration to others that you can fulfill your dreams – if you run after them. Additionally, she was raising funds to support Girls on the Run, a group that “encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.”

I love Katie’s heart and determination. She triumphed over so many daunting challenges: training for such an epic event, the logistics of staging a cross-country run, weather unpredictability and finding places to stay along the way. And even in the end, when her knee stubbornly refused to allow Katie to run, she persevered, and walked for the last 3 weeks.

And she’s not done yet! She’s retracing her steps back across the US (but in van this time!) and she’s working on a book. You can keep up with Katie on PaveYourLane.com. And as her web address alludes to, we all have the power to pave our own lane, blaze our own trail, and create a life that dazzles us. What legacy will you leave behind?

A quick camaraderie forms as you marvel over each others’ products, creativity, and plain ol’ gumption.

Ms. Sarah Love is one of the shining stars we met at EcoGift in December 2008. Sarah makes all sorts of lovely things, including this amazing calendar. I got one of her 2009 calendars from her when we were at the show. Each month featured one of her drawings paired with an inspiring message, such as “Innumerable blessings are constantly flowing through your life.” Plus, each day of the week has another inspiring mini-message like “Smile at strangers.” I loved it and promptly bought her 2010 calendar, sight unseen, when it became available. Imagine my surprise and utter delight when I opened this year’s calendar to discover that it is filled with…affirmations! And not only that, a few of them are similar to the affirmations on our shirts (“I am love,” “I am joyous,” “I am free”). Talk about a kindred spirit!

I know that there are some friends of mine and people I’ve met who can’t fathom why you’d possibly want to print positive affirmations on the inside of a shirt. It seems ridiculous to them. But for every one of those people I meet, I also encounter a Sarah Love! The desire to create something beautiful in this world is what inspired us to create Within, and Sarah was similarly inspired. It’s so much fun to connect with people who are on your same page and really understand where you’re coming from. Always remember that no matter what your dream or vision, there are plenty of others who will love it and may have a similar idea themselves…and heck, they might even create a calendar about it! And that, my friends, is called being on the same page!
